Welcome to Comms 312

Hello 312ers:

Per our discussion in class, here is the lowdown and gear and software, etc.:

SYLLABUS

I passed out a printed syllabus in class, email me should you lose yours or need it at any time.

CLOSED FACEBOOK GROUP

Other than for posting grades, I do not use Learning Suite. We run a lot of the class via our closed FB group. This is where you will share your drafts and final edits, get and give feedback, etc. So go there and request to join.

EXTERNAL DRIVE

Video files are huge. They can also get corrupted and crash, so its wise to have backups. So in addition to the space on your computer (about 100 gig for this class), it is extremely wise to always back up your work. If you plan on doing video work beyond this class, then you should purchase an external hard drive, a minimum of 500GB. If you are only interested in getting by for this class, then 65 gig Flash drive will do for backup. (I don't believe Flash drives are fast enough to actually work with Premiere.) You will need this the first week of class. In other words, yes, you can get by with only your computer, if you have enough space, but it is EXTREMELY wise to back up your work.

ADOBE PREMIERE

Having Adobe Premiere on your portable computer (and bringing it to class) is highly recommended, but not required. (A significant portion of our class time will be lab time.) Adobe offers a free trial for 14 days: After that there is monthly subscription plan for $29.99 a month. You need to click on "Business" and then on "Single App." Note that all the other cheaper "monthly" offers require an annual commitment, paid monthly. Adobe Premiere Pro is also available in a number of labs across campus, especially the multimedia lab at the library, but I don’t know the specifics on this. Check out the labs you frequent as well. In other words, you can get by in this class by using BYU lab computers, but you won't be able to work on your projects and get direct feedback while in class.

SD-CARD

You need an SD card of at least 16 Gigs and minimum of class 10. I found this Scandisk (a good brand name) SD Card on sale for only $9 via Amazon. This or something like it will meet the requirements.

MIC AND TRIPOD

While there are some mics and tripods available at camera checkout we have so many people taking this class that we are now highly recommending you buy your own tripod (60-inch) and lav microphone. As I suggested in class maybe your partner can buy one and you buy the others. Here is the lav mic and here is the tripod.

If you have any other questions, please post to the FB group.

Dr. Randle
